EXTERIOR PROTECTION
What Are External Roller Shutters
They mount on the outside of your window or door frame, rolling down from a compact headbox in aluminium guide rails. When closed, the interlocking slats form a solid barrier. The key difference from internal blinds is where the protection happens. External shutters block heat, noise, and weather before they reach the glass. Internal coverings only manage what’s already inside.

External Roller Shutters Reveal Fit vs Face Fit
WHY EXTERNAL SHUTTERS
External Roller Shutters for Heat, Security and Noise
Block heat before it gets in
External shutters intercept sunlight before it passes through the glass. Far more effective than anything on the inside. Heat reduction
Physical security barrier
Interlocking slats form a rigid panel. The motor’s internal brake holds the shutter when closed. No external handle or keyhole. Security shutters
Noise reduction
The sealed air pocket between shutter and glass dampens traffic, tram, and aircraft noise. Street-facing windows see the biggest difference. Noise reduction
“I recently had SM Roller Shutters install 16 shutters for my home. The whole process was smooth, neat, tidy, and the pricing was competitive. David was a pleasure to deal with, very accommodating and professional.”

External Roller Shutter Durability and Weather Resistance
WEATHER RESISTANCE
External shutters sit on the frontline of Melbourne’s weather. The aluminium doesn’t rust. EXTERNAL ROLLER SHUTTERS FAQ
Common questions about external roller shutters.
What is the difference between external roller shutters and internal blinds?
External roller shutters mount on the outside of your window or door and block heat, noise, and weather before they reach the glass. Internal blinds sit behind the glass and only manage what’s already entered the room. For heat reduction alone, external shutters are dramatically more effective because they intercept sunlight before it passes through.
Can external roller shutters be retrofitted to an existing house?
Yes. The headbox and guide rails mount directly onto the external wall using masonry anchors (for brick and render) or through-bolts with packers (for weatherboard). No structural changes are needed. You keep your current glass, frames, and window hardware. See our installation process for the four steps from measure to install.
What is the difference between reveal fit and face fit roller shutters?
Reveal fit (in-reveal) means the headbox and guide rails sit inside the window opening for a flush finish from the street. It requires enough reveal depth and works best on newer homes. Face fit (on-wall) means the headbox and guide rails mount on the wall surface outside the window opening. It works on any window regardless of reveal depth and is the most common option for existing Melbourne homes. Our team assesses every window during the free measure.
How much do external roller shutters cost in Melbourne?
Between $770 and $1,655 per opening for standard single-storey windows. The average is around $1,090 incl GST. Patio enclosures and sliding doors carry additional cost. Every quote is confirmed in writing. See our pricing guide.
Can external roller shutters be used to enclose a patio?
Yes. External shutters can enclose the open sides of a patio, alfresco, or pergola for weather protection, privacy, insect control, and wind blocking. When raised, the area is completely open. Most customers start with one or two sides. See our patio shutters page for more on outdoor applications.
