HOW INSULATED ROLLER SHUTTERS WORK
How Insulated Roller Shutters Work
Windows represent the primary thermal weak point in residential construction. Single-glazed glass does almost nothing to stop heat transfer.
Insulated roller shutters add a foam-filled aluminium barrier on the outside of the glass, plus an air pocket between the shutter and the window. That combination slows heat transfer in both directions, keeping your rooms closer to the temperature you’ve set without the system running as hard.
Foam-Filled Aluminium Roller Shutter Slats
FOAM-FILLED ALUMINIUM
Each slat is precision roll-formed aluminium alloy filled with CFC-free polyurethane foam during the roll-forming process. The foam adds structural rigidity, thermal insulation, and smooth quiet operation when the shutter rolls.
The slat is 42mm high and 8.5mm thick. It’s not hollow aluminium with air inside. It’s a solid insulating core wrapped in a metal shell.

YEAR ROUND INSULATION
Insulated Roller Shutters for Summer and Winter
In summer, closed shutters intercept sunlight before it passes through the glass. The aluminium reflects heat on the exterior side and the foam core slows transfer through the slat.
In winter, the same barrier works in reverse. Heat escaping through the glass hits the shutter and the insulating air pocket slows it down. Your heating system maintains temperature longer and cycles less often.
WHERE TO START
Best Windows for Insulated Roller Shutters
West and north-facing windows are the priority for summer heat gain. Large sliding doors and floor-to-ceiling windows lose the most heat in winter because of the glass area. Bedrooms facing busy roads benefit from both the insulation and the noise reduction. Most customers start with 4 to 8 openings and expand coverage over time. We assess every window during the free measure.

Insulated Roller Shutters vs Double Glazing
INSULATED SHUTTERS VS DOUBLE GLAZING
Double glazing replaces your existing windows with two panes and a sealed air gap. It’s effective but expensive to retrofit, especially on older homes.
Roller shutters add insulation on the outside without touching your existing windows. The cost is a fraction of double glazing and you get security, privacy, blockout, and noise reduction on top. For best results, use both.
MORE THAN INSULATION
Insulated Roller Shutters With Security, Blockout and Noise Reduction
There’s no separate “insulated shutter” at a premium price. Every roller shutter we install uses the same foam-filled aluminium slat. Insulation, heat reduction, blockout, noise dampening, privacy, and security all come standard. SM tubular motors are included. Elero motors are $265 more per shutter.

What Affects Insulated Roller Shutter Performance
WHAT AFFECTS INSULATION
How much insulation improvement you notice depends on your windows, their orientation, and the rest of your home. Single-glazed windows experience the most significant improvement. Larger glass areas benefit more.
West and north-facing windows get the most sun in summer. Older homes with less wall insulation notice the change more. Four shutters on the worst windows is a good start. Eight to twelve covers most of the problem.

INSULATED ROLER SHUTTERS FAQ
Common questions about insulated roller shutters.
How do insulated roller shutters actually work?
Each shutter uses foam-filled aluminium slats that sit on the outside of your window. When closed, the slats interlock into a solid panel and an insulating air pocket forms between the shutter and the glass. This creates two layers of insulation: the foam core inside the slat, and the trapped air behind it. Together, they slow heat transfer in both directions. The result is a more stable temperature with less effort from your heating and cooling system.
Are insulated roller shutters better than double glazing?
Both insulate windows, but shutters are significantly cheaper to retrofit and don’t require replacing your existing glass and frames. Roller shutters add insulation on the outside without touching your existing windows, and they also give you security, privacy, blockout, and noise reduction. Double glazing only handles insulation and noise. For best results, use both together.
What type of foam is inside roller shutter slats?
CFC-free polyurethane, injected into the aluminium profile during the roll-forming process. The foam adds structural rigidity, thermal insulation, and smooth quiet operation. The slats are 42mm high and 8.5mm thick. Australian made.
Do insulated roller shutters help reduce electricity bills?
They reduce how hard your heating and cooling systems have to work. Less heat through the glass means less energy consumed. Every home is different, so we don’t make specific dollar claims. Customers consistently report their systems cycling less after installation. See our energy saving shutters page for more.
