A tubular motor is housed within the drive axle, concealed within the headbox assembly. Hit the switch and the shutter rolls up or down in the guide rails. Release and it stops wherever you want. No belt, no chain, no exposed mechanism. The motor also provides security. When it stops, the internal brake engages and holds the shutter in place. Licensed electrical wiring and safety certificate included with every install.

Manual shutters work. But for homes with more than a couple of windows, operating each one by hand with a strap or winder becomes impractical.

The motor adds security (the brake holds the shutter when closed), enables smart home integration, and makes daily use effortless. The cost difference between manual and electric is small relative to the total job. For these reasons, we only install electric and we’ve never had a customer wish they went manual.

Every shutter comes with a rotary wall switch. The smart WiFi upgrade replaces it with a touchscreen and adds a remote and phone app (Smart Life, iOS/Android). Compatible with Google Home and Amazon Alexa. Apple HomeKit not natively supported. If WiFi goes down, touchscreen and remote still work (RF-based). Scheduling is popular: close west-facing shutters at 2pm, open everything at 7am, simulate occupancy on holiday.

With smart WiFi, set daily schedules per shutter or group. Popular uses: close west-facing at 2pm before the heat, open all at 7am, vary times on holiday to simulate occupancy, close street-facing at sunset for automatic privacy. Override any schedule from the app or wall switch. Schedules run locally so they work even if internet drops.

If you have manual shutters with a strap or winder, we can typically retrofit a motor into the existing axle. Depends on brand, age, and axle diameter (modern motors are 45mm). We assess during a free on-site assessment. If conversion works, it costs considerably less than replacement. If it doesn’t, we’ll explain why and quote for new shutters.

Every electric shutter requires wiring to a dedicated power supply. Licensed electricians are coordinated for every install. Cables are chased into the wall for a concealed, flush finish. For double-storey homes where chasing isn’t possible, electricians use conduits. You receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety when the job is done. The electrical work is warranted for 12 months.

Shutters stay in whatever position they were in. Closed stays closed, open stays open. The motor brake remains engaged so a closed shutter can’t be pushed up from outside. Your home stays secure. UPS backup available through the electrician if uninterrupted operation matters.
