The Melbourne shutter game

Why getting roller shutters feel harder than it should.

Most Melbourne roller shutter companies run the same four-step playbook. It costs you time, money, and trust. Here's what to watch for.

01

The 40 to 60 percent off sales game and "today only" pressure

Inflated list prices designed to be "discounted" 40 to 60 percent in your living room so you feel like you scored, layered with manufactured "today only" deadlines to stop you comparing quotes. The whole thing is theatre to extract maximum margin.

02

Five different handoffs from quote to warranty

Sales rep visits to quote. Office admin schedules. Subcontracted installers fit. Another subcontractor wires. A warranty helpline takes claims if anything goes wrong. By the time you have a problem, nobody you've spoken to is still in the loop on your job.

03

Easy on sales, impossible after

The commissioned rep answers in two rings before you sign. After install your warranty issue lives on hold music. The rep is paid on closing deals, not solving problems years later.

04

Months turnaround, not weeks

Promised two to three weeks in the quote, delivered three to four months in reality. The company juggles contractor crews across more jobs than they can handle, and your install slips.

How we run it differently

Four problems, four direct solutions.

Published prices instead of fake discounts. Owner on the tools, not a sales rep on commission. A warranty backed by the same team that did the install. And a capped intake of around 200 shutters a month so every job gets proper attention.

See the SM Difference
Real prices, no sales pitch

Real prices, published online. No commissioned reps.

From $880 per shutter on the website, fully installed with GST and licensed electrical included. The same price today, tomorrow, and next month. No commissioned reps designed to extract maximum margin from your living room. No fake list price to discount from, so no fake discount needed. The quote you receive is the price you pay.

Owner-led, in-house

The owner quotes, organises, and stays across your job.

The business owner attends your quote and organises your install from start to finish, working directly with our in-house install team. The same person understands your job from the first call through to install day and beyond. No sales rep handing off to an office admin handing off to a subcontract installer handing off to a warranty helpline. One point of contact, every step.

About SM Roller Shutters
Warranty and word of mouth

We live on referrals, not marketing budgets.

We don't have a big marketing budget compared to the franchise operators. We live on word-of-mouth from happy customers, which means we take pride in our own work, focus hard on customer satisfaction, and come back to fix anything that needs fixing. Your referral to a neighbour is worth more to us than any ad campaign. That's the engine behind our warranty.

Streamlined process, capped intake

Around 200 shutters a month, so every job gets attention.

Owner quotes. Our own in-house team measures, customises in our Brookfield workshop, and installs. We cap our intake at around 200 shutters a month so every job gets careful attention from start to finish. No contractor crews juggled across competing jobs, no slipping install dates because we said yes to too much.

HOW IT WORKS

Four steps. No surprises.

From the first call to install. Around four weeks, one team start to finish. See our full install process →

01

We call back same business day to confirm scope and book your measure.

When your form comes in, we ring you within the same business day to confirm we cover your suburb and lock in a time for the on-site measure. Forms received after hours get a callback first thing the next morning.

Same-day callback during business hours.

02

On-site measure, fixed written quote, install date locked in if you proceed.

We come to you, usually within the week. Every opening you want shuttered gets measured properly, you’ll be walked through colour and motor options, and you’ll get a fixed written quote on the spot. If the price makes sense, we book the install date that day and tell you exactly when your shutters will be ready. No guessing.

Most measures take around 30 minutes.

03

Custom-prepared in our Melbourne workshop.

Once you confirm with a 30% deposit, your shutters are cut, assembled, and finished to spec in our workshop. The deposit covers the materials we order in your colour and exact dimensions, so you’re not paying for stock prep on someone else’s job.

Lead time around four weeks, sometimes quicker.

04

Install day, full demo, balance only paid on completion.

Our in-house team fits the shutters, the licensed sparky handles the wiring, and we walk you through how everything works before we leave. Final balance is only paid once you’re happy with the install. Your 10-year shutter warranty starts that day.

Most homes installed in a single day.

WHY MELBOURNE INSTALLS THEM

What roller shutters actually do for your home.

Seven benefits, ordered by what Melbourne buyers search for most. Every SM roller shutter delivers security, privacy, noise reduction, light blockout, insulation, heat control, and energy savings. Most homeowners install for one benefit and enjoy four or five more by accident.

Craftsmanship

Australian-made. Cut to your exact opening.

Every shutter is cut, assembled, and finished to your exact opening in our Brookfield workshop. Aluminium body with foam-filled slats, Australian-made, weather-rated for outside. No stock sizes, no off-the-shelf compromise. The shutter that arrives is the one your window actually asked for.
Electric Shutters

Quiet operation, simple control.

Wall switch, remote, or scheduled timers. The kind of everyday upgrade you stop noticing because it just works, every time, for years on end. Optional smart home integration and voice control if you want it.
The Motors

Built around a motor that lasts.

The motor is the part that wears, so it's the part we don't compromise on. SM tubular motors come standard with a 5-year warranty. Elero tubular motors from Germany are the premium upgrade at $265 per shutter, noticeably quieter and built for higher cycle counts. Both sized correctly to your shutter weight.

PRODUCT APPLICATIONS

Shutters for every opening in your home.

Terms & Conditions

SM SMART TRADING PTY LTD | ABN 15 675 563 809 | (“SM Roller Shutters”, “we”, “us”, “our”)

Last updated: 30 July 2026

TERMS AND CONDITIONS (SUPPLY, INSTALLATION, REPAIRS)

These Terms and Conditions (“Terms”) apply to all quotes, orders, supply, installation, repairs, and services provided by SM Roller Shutters to you (“you”, “customer”). If there is any inconsistency between these Terms and a written quote or invoice, the quote or invoice will apply to the extent of the inconsistency.

1. DEFINITIONS. “Goods” means roller shutters and any related parts, accessories, remotes, controls, and materials we supply. “Services” means measuring, quoting, custom preparation, installation, electrical work (where included), repairs, and any related labour. “Work” starts when we order materials, commence custom preparation, schedule installation resources, or otherwise begin preparation for your job.

2. QUOTES AND ACCEPTANCE. Quotes are valid for 30 days from the date issued unless stated otherwise in writing. A quote is accepted when you confirm acceptance in writing (including SMS or email) or pay a deposit. Quotes are based on conditions reasonably observed at the time of quoting. If conditions differ, a variation may be required. If there is an obvious error in a quote, we may correct it before installation begins.

3. DEPOSITS AND PAYMENTS. A deposit of 30% is required to place an order (unless stated otherwise on your invoice). Your deposit covers admin, scheduling, ordering materials, and preparation work. The remaining balance is due on completion of installation. If payment is overdue, we may pause work, reschedule, and recover reasonable costs. Payment is accepted by the methods stated on your invoice.

4. VARIATIONS AND ADDITIONAL WORK. Changes requested after accepting the quote will require a written variation for your approval and may affect price and timeline. Extra work outside the agreed scope will be discussed and approved before proceeding. If the work area is not clear on arrival, additional charges may apply — labour charged at $100/hour or $50/shutter depending on what is required.

5. SCHEDULING AND DELAYS. All timeframes are estimates only and may vary due to supplier delays, material availability, workload, weather, or site conditions. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for penalties or indirect losses caused by delays.

6. SITE ACCESS AND CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES. You agree to provide safe, clear access to work areas and power where required; remove obstacles, furniture, blinds, and fragile items; secure pets and children; ensure someone over 18 is on site; and obtain any approvals required (landlord, body corporate, permits). If access is not available or the site is unsafe, we may reschedule and a return visit fee may apply.

7. INSTALLATION AND COSMETIC LIMITS. Installation involves drilling and fixings and may cause minor marks to surfaces. Unless agreed in writing, we do not repaint or refinish surfaces. If we cause damage due to our negligence, we will take reasonable steps to rectify it.

8. ELECTRICAL WORK. Electrical work will be completed by a licensed electrician we organise. A Certificate of Electrical Safety will be provided for all electrical work completed.

9. OWNERSHIP AND RISK. All Goods remain our property until full payment is received and cleared. Risk passes to you once installed. If payment remains unpaid, you agree to provide reasonable access for us to recover unpaid Goods.

10. CANCELLATIONS. Before Work starts: we may retain or charge an amount reflecting reasonable costs incurred. After Work starts: you are responsible for all reasonable costs including materials ordered or custom-prepared and labour already performed. Refunds will be reduced by these costs except where required by law.

11. AUSTRALIAN CONSUMER LAW. Our Goods and Services come with consumer guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. Nothing in these Terms limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

12. WARRANTY — RESIDENTIAL USE. Aluminium roller shutters (including window roller shutters): 10 years on shutter profile slats. Electric motors: 5 years (SM tubular motor) or 7 years (Elero motor, where fitted). Electronic components including receivers, remotes, wall switches, and WiFi control units: 1 year. Polycarbonate Roller Shutter: 3 years on shutter profile slats and electrical motors. Alfresco Roller Shutter: 5 years on shutter profile slats and electrical motors. Manual winders, stainless steel cables, bearings, brackets, axles, pelmets, and other parts: 1 year. Roof shutter applications or shutters installed at less than 70 degrees pitch: 1 year. Workmanship and electrical workmanship/parts supplied by us: 1 year. Commercial goods, services, and repair jobs: 1 year unless stated otherwise in writing. All warranty periods start from the installation date.

13. WARRANTY EXCLUSIONS. Warranty does not apply to issues caused by: relocation of the shutter; unauthorised modifications or repairs; use of non-genuine parts; misuse, neglect, or lack of maintenance; continued use while a fault is present; power surges, vandalism, impact, storms, floods, bushfires, lightning, salt exposure, chemicals, extreme weather, or animal interference; or normal wear and tear and cosmetic ageing.

14. WARRANTY CLAIMS. Submit claims by email within the warranty period, including your name, address, installation date, photos/video where possible, and description of the issue. We may schedule an inspection. If covered, we will repair or replace the defective component. If not covered, we will advise paid repair options.

15. REPAIRS AND CALL-OUT FEES. Standard call-out fee: $165 within 30 km. Additional travel charges apply beyond 30 km. A call-out fee applies when the workmanship warranty has expired or where the issue is not caused by us. For shutters not installed by us, the call-out fee is waived if you proceed with the paid repair recommended at that visit. After-hours/weekend/public holiday call-out fee starts at $495 within 30 km. Labour and parts for non-warranty repairs are charged separately. No paid work proceeds without your approval. If you decline repairs after attendance, the call-out fee remains payable.

16. URGENT REPAIRS. We will schedule repairs as soon as reasonably possible. Urgent or after-hours attendance may be available at higher rates as set out above.

17. WARRANTY TRANSFERABILITY. Warranties apply to the original purchaser and original installation site. Any transfer requires our written approval.

18. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY. Nothing excludes consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss. Where permitted by law, our liability is limited to supplying the services again or paying the cost of having the services supplied again.

19. CHANGES TO TERMS. Any updated Terms apply to future quotes and orders. The Terms that apply to your job are those in place when you accept your quote, unless both parties agree in writing to a change.

20. GOVERNING LAW. These Terms are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia. Disputes will be handled in the courts of Victoria.
