What Are Motorised Roller Shutters
A tubular motor is housed within the drive axle, concealed within the headbox assembly above your window. When activated, it turns the axle and the shutter rolls up or down. The motor is hermetically sealed, protected from weather and dust, and invisible from outside. Motorised and electric mean the same thing. At SM, every shutter we install is motorised. The choice is which motor and which control method.

Motorised Roller Shutters With Smart Home Control
Every shutter comes with a rotary wall switch as standard. The smart WiFi upgrade adds a touchscreen wall switch, handheld remote, and phone app (Smart Life, iOS and Android).
Compatible with Google Home and Amazon Alexa. Apple HomeKit is not natively supported. You can set daily schedules, group shutters by room, and control from anywhere. If WiFi goes down, the touchscreen and remote still work (RF-based).
Retrofit Motorised Roller Shutters to Manual Shutters
UPGRADE EXISTING SHUTTERS
If you have manual shutters with a strap or winder, we can typically slide a tubular motor into the existing axle without replacing the entire shutter. Whether it works depends on brand, age, and axle size. We assess during a free on-site assessment. If a retrofit is practical, the cost is considerably less than replacement. If it’s not, we’ll explain why and quote for new shutters with full warranty.

Common questions about motorised roller shutters.
What is the difference between motorised and electric roller shutters?
Nothing. They’re the same thing. Both terms describe a roller shutter with a tubular motor inside the axle that drives the shutter up and down. Some people search for “motorised” and others for “electric.” At SM, every shutter we install uses a motor. The real choice is which motor (SM standard or Elero premium) and which control method (rotary switch or smart WiFi). See our electric shutters page for control options.
Can you retrofit a motor to an existing manual roller shutter?
Yes, in most cases. If you have manual shutters with a strap or winder, we can typically slide a tubular motor into the existing axle without replacing the entire shutter. How quiet are motorised roller shutters?
Both options are quiet enough that they won’t disturb someone sleeping in the same room. SM motors operate at 17 RPM. Elero motors are noticeably quieter at 14 RPM with a noiseless soft brake that eliminates the thud at the end of travel. For bedrooms and living areas where noise sensitivity matters, Elero is the popular choice. For laundry, garage, or less-used rooms, SM motors are perfectly fine.
Can you control motorised roller shutters from a smartphone?
Yes, with the smart WiFi upgrade. The Smart Life app (iOS and Android) lets you open, close, and schedule individual shutters or groups from anywhere. You can also use voice control through Google Home and Amazon Alexa. Apple HomeKit is not natively supported. If WiFi goes down, the touchscreen wall switch and handheld remote still work because they use RF, not WiFi.
What warranty do SM and Elero motors have?
SM motors carry a 5-year warranty. Elero motors carry a 5-year SM warranty plus the Elero manufacturer warranty on top. If a motor fails within warranty, we replace it on-site within 3 business days at no charge. The swap takes about 45 minutes. You work directly with the team that installed your shutters. What happens to motorised roller shutters during a power outage?
Shutters stay in whatever position they were in when the power went out. Closed stays closed, open stays open. The motor’s internal brake remains engaged, so a closed shutter can’t be pushed up from outside. Your home stays secure. When power returns, everything works normally. If uninterrupted operation is important, a UPS can be arranged through the electrician during installation.
